New Addition to the Old Jail Museum
MVHS Board Members Ben K. Lohman, Bob Perdue and President Ruth Wall, with restorationist Donald Miller, accepted the restored Talking Rock Post Office desk for the Sheriff's Office at the Old Pickens County Jail.
The Marble Valley Historical Society, Inc. recently received a new addition to the furnishings and museum at the Old Pickens County Jail. Donald Miller of Bent Tree completed the restoration of the old Talking Rock Post Office desk and delivered it to the Sheriff's Office at the Old Jail. The desk was donated to the Society by Mrs. Louise Sosebee Burrell of Rome and her son, Jame Burrell of Adairsville. The desk was used by Mrs. Burrell's aunt, Postmaster Jewell Morrison, during her 39 plus years of service at the post office. Over the years the desk was dismantled and at the time of the bequeath to the Society, it was in some 30 plus pieces. In addition to assembling the desk, Mr. Miller made and replaced the missing pieces , including the curved side which held the roll top, and the desk top. Mr. Miller donated his extensive hours of restoration. The result is a beautiful historic piece of Pickens County's past. The Marble Valley Historical Society, Inc. is indebted to the Burrells and to Mr. Miller for his dedication and artistic skills in preservation of the desk. Additional displays regarding Talking Rock have been added to the museum.
